American Academic Health System is dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the great traditions of America’s academic medical centers and teaching hospitals. Working collaboratively, we take a strong, disciplined approach to operations in order to build the stable foundation needed to support these exemplary traditions and let our hospitals focus on doing what they do best – developing and delivering advanced care.
We are proud to offer the kind of highly specialized care and advanced diagnostic technology that is not available at a community hospital. At the same time, we recognize the critical role that our referring physicians play in the long-term care of their patients. We believe the right place for patients with complex conditions to receive continuing care after they have been treated in an academic setting is back home in their community – with the physicians they know and trust.
We partner with proven community-based organizations to address underlying social determinants of health such as behavioral health issues, lack of access to quality healthcare services, environmental disparities, food scarcity, and trauma. To address these issues, we integrate community organizations, religious institutions and social services agencies into our care network to create an enhanced patient-focused healthcare delivery system.
American Academic Health System owns or manages both academic and community-based acute care hospitals. AAHS is an affiliate of Paladin Healthcare, a national healthcare management company with a proven track record of building strong healthcare delivery networks in urban and suburban areas, including some of the nation’s most diverse communities facing healthcare challenges.
Working collaboratively with our medical staff, nurses and other providers, we bring a strong, disciplined focus on all aspects of hospital operations to the academic medical centers and general acute care hospitals we operate.
Our leadership team has many years of experience in successfully operating academic medical centers as well as general acute care hospitals. This includes such prestigious institutions as Howard University Hospital, The George Washington University Hospital, Hahnemann University Hospital and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.
Our relationship with Howard University has enhanced Howard University Hospital’s operational efficiency, achieved fiscal viability, advanced the institution’s historical academic health sciences mission and provided continued vital access to the thousands of residents in the region who depend on the hospital for care.
Rooted in the core belief that clinical efficiency and effectiveness are the catalysts for quality care, we seek to transform clinical delivery processes from the moment a patient arrives in the emergency department through discharge and beyond. Our goal is high-quality, patient-centered care, with improved clinical metrics and high-performing physicians and nurses.
We promote a culture where patients are respected, unique healthcare needs and social conditions are understood, care is personalized, and patients are discharged to appropriate care settings and support systems. We believe excellent employee engagement is integral to excellent patient experience.
Our hospitals are committed to educating, inspiring, and improving the quality of life and overall health outcomes of our patients. We seek to foster a bond with the community that is unique, impactful, and responsive to the multitude of socioeconomic and health challenges that can be prevented or mitigated through education, early detection, access, and care coordination.
